New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur not considering quarterback change

The New York Giants will still be Eli Manning’s team for now, as Pat Shurmur isn’t ready to change quarterbacks this early in the season.

The New York Giants have had a frustrating beginning to their season, starting off 0-2 with losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills. The offense struggled in their 28-14 loss, with Eli Manning failing to complete a pass until the second quarter.

Despite the 0-2 start and the offensive struggles, coach Pat Shurmur isn’t making a move to sixth-overall pick Daniel Jones just yet.

When asked about making a move to Jones during his postgame press conference, Shurmur spoke about needing to see the team improve in all areas. He then added about making a quarterback change that, “I don’t think that’s a conversation for right now.”

Through two games, Manning has 556 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT (both INT occurred against the Bills). He has completed 63 percent of his passes on the season.

The team appears to still believe that either Manning can lead them out of this hole or that Jones isn’t ready to start yet.

It’s possible that the team wants to wait until Jones is in more of a position to succeed than he currently is, as the wide receiver group has been weakened thus far.

Golden Tate has two games remaining on his four-game suspension, Sterling Shepard is in the concussion protocol and No. 3 receiver Cody Latimer left Sunday’s game with a concussion. Fifth-round rookie Darius Slayton has also failed to make his debut due to groin and hamstring injuries.

Jones was a controversial pick and the Giants might want to wait until they have their weapons back at wide receiver until he sees game action. It’s also possible that they see something in Manning’s play that makes them want to leave him in the lineup for now.

Either way, it appears that it will be Manning, not Jones, throwing the ball next Sunday in Tampa Bay (4:05 p.m. ET, FOX).
