New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur isn’t considering benching rookie quarterback Daniel Jones after his performance against Arizona.

Daniel Jones‘ turnover woes continued on Sunday in the team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The New York Giants rookie quarterback threw a pick (his seventh of the year) and lost two fumbles (his third and fourth) in a 27-21 defeat to drop to 2-5.

After the game, head coach Pat Shurmur was asked about the possibility of benching Jones. After all, the Giants are indeed paying their backup quarterback Eli Manning around $23 million this season.

The second-year Giants coach quickly refuted this possibility, however.

“No,” he said. “I think Daniel’s going to learn from everything that’s going on, just like all the other rookies in there playing are going to learn from the things that happen. But you have to learn and you have to win games, and I’m well aware of that. I’m totally well aware of it.”

Despite Jones’ struggles (six touchdowns to seven picks through his five starts), the support around him isn’t fully there. This offense has dealt with injuries to Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram.

Not to mention, the offensive line hasn’t shown up much either. The front-five allowed eight sacks in the loss to Arizona.

Therefore, it’s evident that the offensive struggles aren’t 100% Jones’ fault. This kid needs time to develop as well as healthy support around him in order to succeed. Benching him would put this team on the wrong track moving forward.
