New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones was excited to get some on-field action against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

The New York Giants found themselves on the losing side of a Week 1, 35-17 rout against the Dallas Cowboys. With poor play-calling on the offensive side along with a week performance from the secondary, Big Blue dropped to 0-1.

Quarterback Eli Manning had a decent game for the Giants, completing 30 of his 44 throws for 306 yards and one touchdown. He showed he still has some left in the tank, but that didn’t stop the Giants from putting in rookie quarterback Daniel Jones in the game. With the contest out of reach for New York, the Giants entered Jones with 1:46 left to play to see what he could do.

“It was exciting to run out there,” Jones said, per Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post. “It was good to get my feet wet.”

Jones finished 3-for-4 for 17 yards during the one possession he was on the field for. However, he ended the drive with a fumble on a scramble play in which he initially passed the first down marker. It’s Jones’ first-ever turnover in the NFL. Now, he knows his ball security on those types of plays will be something he’ll need to improve on.

“I didn’t do a good job protecting the ball,” the rookie said. “I’ve got to make sure I keep it secure.”

Jones played in all four preseason games, completing 85.3% of his throws for 416 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

However, in those games, he mainly played against opposing teams’ backups. This time around, it was obviously a different story for him.

“Just it being a regular-season game, it had a different speed to it,” Jones said. “The game’s a little different, but it’s still exciting. During the game I was trying to stay engaged, find a way to help, making sure I know what’s going on and understanding what Eli’s doing.”

The Giants take on the Buffalo Bills in their Week 2 game this coming Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.
