New York Jets HC Adam Gase unhappy with ESPN airing Sam Darnold’s ‘ghosts’ comment

Adam Gase isn’t happy with ESPN’s decision to air Sam Darnold’s “ghosts” comment during the New York Jets’ Monday night loss.

Whatever New York Jets‘ quarterback Sam Darnold was seeing on Monday night, it didn’t exactly assist him in his performance. The second-year pro completed just 11 of 32 passes for 86 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions.

In the midst of the 33-0 defeat at the hands of the Patriots, Darnold was mic’d up by ESPN and indeed mentioned he was “seeing ghosts.” It’s something that became a headline when discussing the team’s fifth loss of the year. Afterward, Jets head coach Adam Gase expressed how unhappy he was that ESPN decided to air those comments.

It is, in fact, a weird comment. That’s mostly why ESPN aired it on national television.

It’s likely that Darnold was feeling jumpy in the pocket due to the constant free rushers New England sent his way. The Jets had no answer for the Patriots pressure and it forced Darnold into plenty of bad throws.

When the quarterback was asked about the “ghosts” comment after the game, he provided sort of a vague response.

“When I talk to the coaches, I just got to be straight up and, for me, I just got to see the field a lot better; that’s kind of what that means,” he said, per Jelani Scott of

The Jets have now fallen to 1-5 on the year and are in third place in the AFC East division. They’ll travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
